Dextremadura is a new gourmet food shop featuring artesanal products from Extremadura.  The La Chinata brand figures prominently on the shelves, including their line of beauty products made from extra virgin olive oil, as well as beautifully packaged food products, all at very reasonable prices. There’s also decent selection of wines and owner Felipe Romero will soon be organising free wine tasting events, so drop by and get put on the mailing list.

Wabi Sabi Vintage Market

This afternoon I stopped into Wabi Sabi Shop & Gallery to check out their Sunday Vintage Market, an exclusive one-day-only event that they were hosting with Mary Jo Torres from Mulita Couture. I was told that this is just the start of regular “every-other-Sunday” events, which will include poetry readings and wine tastings, along with fashion, furniture and art workshops.

Owner María Lopez Vergera opened her bright new space just off the Plaza Encarnación in part to help make people feel less intimidated about walking into an “Art Gallery”, which I think she mostly does by just being herself.  I love the mix of art and fashion, retro furniture and cool chachkas on display, but it’s the friendly and open welcome you get from María and Manolo that really makes you feel at home.  Seriously my kind of place.

Christmas Camels

Spotted yesterday under the Setas.

The camels were being groomed and prepared for the opening of the Encarnación Christmas Market (today) and will be available for rides until January 5th. They also add a very authentic look to the large Belén (nativity scene) being constructed. More pics from the market later…

Pan con Chocolate

Pan con Chocolate – Panadería y Dulces Artesanos

Pan con Chocolate is a delightful new bakery that opened this week right just off the Plaza Encarnación. It specialises in organic products with a good range of breads, cakes and pies, and savoury pastries. You can also find preserves, oils and vinegars, free range eggs and artesanal cheeses. Cakes and breads can also be made to order, including the impressive six-kilo loaves that are hanging on the wall. Owner Fran is still feeling his way in terms of products and opening hours, but it’s a charming little shop and the service is very welcoming and personal.

Las Setas

Word has it that the monstrosity that has been growing in the Plaza Encarnación, locally known as either “Las Setas” (the mushrooms) or the “Metropol Parasol”, is going to open this Sunday, December 19th. Given the state of the place at the moment it’s hard to believe, but perhaps they are just going to open the lower level where the market stalls are. It would certainly be a boon for the vendors who have been waiting for their new digs (pun intended) for years after it was held up for archaeological excavation and research. And as much as I abhor this atrocious structure, when I had a peek into where the new market stalls will be, it looked very nicely organised indeed.

So do go on Sunday and support the vendors.
Just don’t look up…
