I have known and loved La Azotea since its inception back in 2009, and I have watched its progress (usually from a bar stool 😉 ) over the years. The latest change was moving their flagship restaurant to bigger and brighter premises just around the corner – and also right across the street from their wine bar La Tienda. A very smart move.
La Azotea continues to offer some of the best food in town. This is their first location that doesn’t have a bar, which is where La Tienda comes in handy, as it serves as a more casual spot for tapas. The adjacent “mini bar” is a cosy extension of the restaurant.
As always, the menu focuses of lots of fresh fish and seafood as well as quality meats and produce. Check the daily specials (some of the pics below are of specials so you may not find them when you go, but there will be something equally delish). Favourites include the tempura prawn salad with kimchi mayo, spicy red tuna in a crispy corn tortilla with guacamole and garlicky fried rabbit ribs. Excellent service, terrific wine list, fab food… what more can I say?

Staying on Calle Vicente we were directed as a priority to La Azotea by our local friendly French tapas barman Pierre, and headed over on the off-chance of a seat. Arriving before 9pm we accidentally entered the wine bar first and met the delightful Jeanine. Very friendly, realizing our destination, she immediately crossed the road and got Juan to reserve us a table for two. We drank local Rioja as recommended by Jeanine before crossing the road at restaurant opening time, to find it already nearly full. Juan was brilliant, placed us, and looked after us extremely well despite the crowds packed around the tapas counter and eyeing us jealously at our table. Food and wine were fantastic and before we left we booked again for the next night – our last in Sevilla. We were lucky and there was a gap between 9pm and 10.30pm. The next night we were on time, but again La Azotea was packed and so we slightly overran our allotted time. Juan told us to take our time and the next seating would have to wait at the bar, no pressure at all. Fortunately they didn’t have to wait too long, but once again the food was superb, as was the service by Juan and his young and friendly staff. Somewhere we’ll definitely head for next time in Sevilla.
Hi Veronica & James,
What an excellent tribute to one of my top five favourite tapas bars in town. It’s great to know that someone just walking in off the street still gets treated like a special and valued client – though this was also the case the first time I happened into La Azotea. The combination of wonderful food and genuine friendly attention is unbeatable. So, when are you coming back?
I also just walked in off the street and had a great experience here on friday (19 nov.). I met Juan and his wife Janine, Juan also introduced me to another solo diner from the US whom he had just met. The other staff were also warm and very helpful with wine. The food was pretty darn good too! The brochette of rape and the morcilla were my favorite. Thanks for sharing your dining experiences!
