Abacerías are a traditional type of shop-cum-bar whose origins date back to Moorish times (the word itself is Arabic, and means something like “store”), but which had been gradually disappearing until about thirty years ago, when they experienced a revival. Consequently many of them, despite a “rustic” appearance, are actually relatively new. Food shops without bars are known as ultramarinos.

They range from small and old style, like Casa Moreno or Antigua Abacería de San Lorenzo, to modern upmarket establishments such as Flores Jamones & Vinos or Gourmet Experience Duque, but they all feature high quality products which you can sample on the premises or take away with you.
