Macarena

Macarena is the northeastern quarter of the old city, extending from Plaza Encarnación along Feria and San Luis streets to the Andalucia parliament building (and beyond, if you include the more modern “outer Macarena” suburbs). It’s a mainly residential and working class neighbourhood with a character that’s quite different to the commercial and monumental parts of the city, and includes the city’s oldest market, whose origins go back to mediaeval times. Bars tend to the traditional and typical, but this is starting to change, particularly in areas closer to the centre, but it’s well worth while to get off the beaten track and explore.
