La Monda

I’d been to this location before many years ago, in various incarnations, but this was the first time since José Manuel Aguado Anaya took over the premises in March 2018, and renamed it La Monda. The layout of the bar is distinctive, with a bar and tapas area at ground level, and with split level (half a floor down, and half a floor up) dining rooms to the side. The decor is light and simple and includes columns of mortared brick, as well as padding on the low lintel above the stairway to the upper level (for people taller than me).

As La Monda is in a fairly touristy part of town my food expectations were not that high, but in the event I was pleasantly surprised. We had an excellent pipirrana (onion and pepper salad) with mackerel and avocado, an oyster mushroom and asparagus omelette (lots of mushroom), and finished with a crispy, juicy grilled presa with mojo picon. Nice manzanilla sherry to start, followed by an albariño white wine and an excellent young red from Córdoba. In fact, many regional wines are featured here. Be sure to also check out the daily specials. Pleasant and attentive service made for an enjoyable experience.
