Catalina El Bar

Updated February 2024

This is the fourth establishment by Albert Granados and Gonzalo Villalba of the Catalina Group, which includes La Quinta, Catalina Casa de Comidas, Catalina La Barra. Located on the buzzy corner of Zaragoza and Reyes Católicos, the chic well-lit interior has a long bar lined with high stools and an impressive showcase of traditional cold tapas, with comfortable seating in the two dining areas. There is also an ample side walk terrace.

The menu – and concept – are similar to Catalina La Barra, which recently opened in the Plaza Alfalfa. The croquetas are a must-have (there are three types on offer) and the crispy spring roll filled with cheese, prawns and bacon is another favourite. There’s a tasty selection of montaditos and brioche sandwiches, and the larger plates include grilled meats (I love the chistorra), fish dishes and traditional stews.

Classic tapas, great service and open all day from 8.00 am (the kitchen closes between 4.30 – 8.30 but cold snacks, desserts and drinks are available). In fact there is an impressive cocktail list, along with a good selection of wines. A very welcome addition to the neighbourhood.
