Bar Cibeles 2

The original Bar Cibeles, founded in 1984, was located across the street from the present Bar Cibeles 2, a larger space which the Montero family took over in 1987.  They kept both bars going for a year and from then on maintained just the newer location, which continued to be called Bar Cibeles 2 despite it being the only one in town.  What began as a modest cervecería soon evolved and owner Juan Carlos Montero adapted the menu over the years according to his clients and changes in trends. Last month Juan Carlos retired and sold the business to a restaurateur who runs three other establishments in Rocío and Matalascañas.

There’s a small bar as you enter and two larger dining areas in the back, as well as a terrace in a pedestrian area next to the building. Very much a cheap and cheerful spot with the classic décor of the time and a menu offering traditional tapas and “platos combinados” (not something you see much anymore). Famous (infamous?) for its monster San Jacobo, you can also find fried fish options, serranitos, flamenquines, croquetas and a variety of burgers and sandwiches.
