La Moneda – Casa Inchausti

Without a doubt this wonderful family-run neighbourhood restaurant is one of Sevilla’s best for fabulous fish and seafood. Founded in 1991 by José Luis Inchausti, who brought a little corner of his home town Sanlúcar de Barrameda to Sevilla, the restaurant (and barra next door) are now run by his children, with Jorge and Conchi in the kitchen and Isidro taking care of front of house.

The original location near the Postigo arch is sadly gone, and this smart new spot just a stone’s throw away now takes its place, next door to their more casual La Barra de Inchausti. And while I will always miss the original La Moneda (so many wonderful memories there, including my last birthday) I love this bright new space. The nautical theme from the barra continues here, a somewhat more elegant version with tablecloths, plants and an exposed section of the old Almoravid city wall at the back. There is also a small patio that incorporates the wall and some outdoor tall tables at the entrance.

Specialising in typical Cádiz-style fried fish and various seafood stews, including the best tortillita de camarones in the city, La Moneda is also known for its sopa de galeras, a bread and garlic soup flavoured with mantis shrimp. Other favourite dishes are the swordfish in manzanilla sauce, grilled sea bass with pear alioli, garlicky coquinas… there are also daily specials, including such rare treats as percebes (goose barnacle) in season. For those who prefer “turf” try the tender stewed pork cheeks or grilled beef.
