A stone’s throw from the cathedral, this place is easily the best tapas bar on Mateos Gago. Everything on the menu is delicious but I’d personally recommend the solomillo al whisky, (tender pork loin in a garlicky whisky sauce), chiperones fritos (small fried squid) and the flamenquín (a roll of pork loin, jamón serrano and cheese, breaded and deep fried). Excellent house rioja and a good selection of other wines by the glass.
If you show up and find all the tables are taken (quite usual) just tell one of the waiters you are waiting for a table , either inside or on the terrace, and he’ll put your name down on the waiting list and suggest you have a drink at the bar while you wait.
