O’Tapas Albahaca

It’s taken me years to finally get over to this very neighbourhoody and traditional tapas bar in Triana, and turned out I got there by chance after walking home from the Feria last week. Suddenly there it was and in we went. Aside from the bar area (where we sat) there is a huge dining area in the back and a small sidewalk terrace out front.

The chalkboard menu has both traditional and modern takes on tapas (all 2.90€) as well as larger plates. Out of the three tapas we tried the freshly grilled squid on alioli black rice was the favourite. The others were reheated items that suffered from being “over-sauced”, the gnocchi with a bland cheese sauce (no noticable gorgonzola) and the cuttlefish drowned in a seafood sauce that we could barely taste because of the super-sweet caramalised peppers. It was more like a fishy dessert. Looking again at their menu it does seem like the majority of the dishes are stews or other pre-prepared dishes that get reheated and served with a sauce – and nothing wrong with that per se – but some of the pairings seem a bit odd.

But we had very good service and the wine by the glass was also good and reasonably priced, so I’m willing to give it another go, and hopefully before next Feria!
