Inmaculada Jaramillo and Manuel Ayud, born to Spanish immigrants in the Netherlands, have lived in Andalucía for over 20 years. They opened Los Tulipanes in 2018, choosing the cuisine they grew up with, something that didn’t yet exist in Sevilla. The dining room is small but inviting, and there is also a charming back patio that’s illuminated with coloured lights at night.

The menu offers a selection of Dutch, Indonesian and Andalusian dishes. We loved the frikandel (fried sausages topped with mayo and curry ketchup) and the berenklauw (sliced meatball and onion skewer) but felt the Indonesian-style dishes we tried needed more depth of flavour. Service is casual and friendly.

This is the new project by restaurateur Juan Fernando Fernández; his first personal and professional venture. The space is small and attractively decorated, with both high and low tables and a few seats along the bar, which also holds the display case for fresh fish and daily cold starters. The name is a direct reference of the former name of calle Zaragoza, Calle de la Pajería (Straw Market street), and the walls are adorned with black and white photos of rural Andalucía, including Juan Fernando’s hometown of Los Palacio y Villafranca.

Both the menu is short and serviceable, with a mix of traditional and contemporary dishes. We especially liked the morcilla on toast with cured egg yolk and the bacalao, cabbage and orange salad, but the bacalao bomba arrived cold and the presa tataki was quite chewy. The wine list offers both regional and national wines, with several by the glass options. Service was warm and friendly.

Bodega Góngora has reopened its Bodeguita, a stone’s throw from their original bar, on the corner of Albadera and General Polavieja. It’s an eensy spot with a small bar and a couple of tall tables inside, and a few more tables outside. There’s a light menu of cold tapas, chacinas and cheeses “para picar” but also a few stews, tostas and montaditos. When the kitchen at the Bodega isn’t too busy you can also order hot dishes off their menu.

The gildas are fabulous, try them all! We also tried the smoked sardine and an excellent toasted pringá montadito. There’s a good selection of wines, ice-cold beer and friendly service.

Founded 104 years ago by present owner Pablo Quintero’s grandfather, Casa Lucas is a living testament to Sevilla’s gastronomy and culture, and one of the few traditional ultramarinos (small grocery stores) still with us. Along with its bulk legumes, preserves, artisanal cheeses and Iberian cured meats you can also find traditional tavern fare, with tapas and sandwiches, and a top selection of quality craft beers, wines, and spirits.

Aside from a few “improvements” made by Pablo’s uncle, including replacing the wooden shelves with metal ones and removing the marble counter, things here look pretty much as they have always done, and the result is both charming and cosy, a comfortable spot where you can stop for a drink and a snack – try before you buy – while you shop.

The menu features mostly abacería-style dishes, excellent for wine pairing, with a few daily specials that include soups, stews and other hot dishes. There are over 200 wines on offer, from all over Spain, with about 20 offered by the glass at any given time (that number rises to close 60 if you include sherry wines). Service is terrific, with very knowlegeable staff, which you would expect at at specialist wine bar. We spent a lovely January afternoon there and I am looking forward to going back. There are regular tastings that are announced on their instagram.

Founded in 1988 by Miguel Rodríguez, and now run by his cousin Pedro Díaz and friends Pedro Gallego, Bar Rodríguez is a true bar de barrio. I remember going there some 25 years ago, when I used to frequent the La Imperdible theatre. It recently came back on my radar and I realised I hadn’t been there since I began writing Sevilla Tapas (the same year the theatre closed, in 2007) so I set off to remedy that situation. And I’m so glad I did. We felt immediately at home in the tiny bar (there’s also a small dining room next door and a lovely ample terrace out in the orange tree lined square) and were lucky enough to get a table. Décor is classic sevillano with a long zinc bar and colourful tiles.

It’s a short menu with a selection of cold tapas and hot dishes including fried fish, stews and grilled meats. In season you can enjoy their award-winning caracoles, and there are usually a few daily specials. There’s ice cold beer and a short but serviceable wine list to accompany your meal, and service is fast and very friendly. I already can’t wait to go back.

Chef Daniel Cárdenas takes going back to his roots (raíces) seriously. I first met Danny back in 2012 when he was creating fabulous Peruvian-Japanese fusion food for Nikkei, and then later at Nazca. In 2015 he  realised a personal dream with the opening of the original Raíces, taking over the chic minimalist space once inhabited by Binomio in Nervión. Raíces closed in 2022 and Danny focused on his new project Lima Street Food, a more casual dining experience. This time round he has recreated Raíces, combining Nikkei and Novoandina cuisines, and taking it all to the next level with innovative dishes that remain true to Peru’s rich pre-Hispanic heritage.

The new space is bright and cheerful with colourful Peruvian wall art – a contemporary look that still feel traditional. Love the open kitchen and simple comfortable furnishings. I’m not a fan of tall tables and stools but here the chairs are “medium-tall” and the tables have a metal bar for resting your feet. There is also a small sidewalk terraza.

Highly recommend that you start with a pisco sour, classic or otherwise, while checking out the menu. It’s a pleasantly zingy way to start off your meal and works perfectly with the complementary fried sweet potato chips and cancha (toasted corn nuts). Then choose between the starters, various causas, nikkei, anticucheria and ceviches (friendly staff are there to help!). There is also a selection of “sanguiches” (sandwiches) and stir-fried dishes.

We loved everything you see below but when the causa limeña arrived (with prawns, seafood sauce and lemon foam – recommended by Tania our server) it was seriously one of the best things I’ve eaten all year. And if you can’t decide between the various ceviches on offer just get the mixta like we did, because it is spectacular. With sea bass, prawns, chipirones, octopus, sweet potato and Peruvian corn two ways. Topped off with a vibrant leche de tigre that will make you sit up and take notice. We really wanted to try the lime pie but… next time. So Tania brought us a couple of chupitos of apple and pisco foam which was a refreshing and delicious way to finish.

The wine list is still “in progress” (they just opened last week) but there was a serviceable verdejo, along with a couple of reds and, of course, plenty of cold beer and excellent cocktails. I recently went back with a couple of “extra stomachs” and am hapy to report it was just as enjoyable as my first visit.

The swallows have crossed the river! I was very excited to hear that Triana legends Las Golondrinas (aka the Arcas family) have decided to open up in Sevilla. Make no mistake, Triana is not Sevilla (or vice versa) though of course they share many excellent attributes, one of them being fabulous local gastronomy.  The Arcas family took over the original Las Golondrinas location in Triana in the 60s and since then it has been a family affair, first expanding to a second location in Triana and now here. In Sevilla.

Located just off the Plaza Nueva in the old Bar El Portón, which closed its doors in 2024 after the death of owner Carlos López, a lot of care has been taken with its restoration. Many of the old tiles and fittings have been preserved and complemented with warm wood and exposed brick detailing. I was really happy to see they have also preserved the original tiles outside. There’s a long bar as you enter, a small dining area with low tables at the back, and about 7-8 tables out on the terraza.

The menu is basically the same as at the other two locations with a few differences, such as the grilled arañita. But you’ll still find favourites such as the punta de solomillo, chipirones a la plancha, their wonderful garlicky grilled mushrooms and, of course, those radishes. There are also daily specials. There is a good selection of regional wines, including sherries, and frosty beer comes from a beer tap housed in a beautiful ceramic replica of the Capilla Virgen del Carmen.

Italian and Andalusian cuisine already share many similar characteristics and chef Javier Abascal (Lalola Restaurante) deliciously brings them together with his latest project, Ibérica Trattoria Ibérica. Located on the entreplantas (mezzanine) of the Hotel América in Plaza del Duque, facing Plaza de la Concordia, you can access the restaurant either from the Duque entrance (one flight of stairs) or take a lift from inside the hotel. Décor is modern and sophisticated with large windows all around letting in lots of natural light and offering great views of both squares.

The menu offers a variety of starters along with pasta dishes and a selection of pizzas and some meat and fish options. The braised leek with mortadella and ricotta is fabulous, so light and fresh, and great paired with some crusty bread and extra virgin olive oil. Toasted brioche with Salchicha de Aroche is also fab but best shared so you don’t fill up too quickly. You can choose the sauce and pasta combination you want or go with the “chef’s choice” pasta of the day – we tried the ravioli filled with lobster and prawns and it was exquisite. New on the menu is the pizza bianca with Ibérico sausage and potatoes, an unexpected and delicious combination. We also loved the porco tonnato (presa Ibérica, tuna sauce, fried capers). Excellent service and some terrific wine, both Spanish and Italian. Well done, Javi & team!

Opened in 2023 when four local friends (Javier, Ignacio, Carlos, and José Manuel) took over a location that had housed several different bars over the years and made it their own. Hidden down a small corridor just off Calle Cuna, the indoor traditional décor is attractive and welcoming and their charming patio feels nicely secluded and cosy.

The short menu is traditional with a few twists – check the daily specials, including rice at weekends. And ice-cold beer comes served… on ice! We enjoyed our tapas and although none especially stood out everything was well prepared and tasty. There’s a limited wine list that includes some sherry wines and service is friendly. A nice little neighbourhood bar.
