After 15 years Catalina Casa de Comidas has a fresh new look and a new menu. Sister bar to La Quinta Brasserie next door, and the original location of the Catalina family (now with 7 around town), the ever expanding Catalina empire continues to be run by chef Gonzalo Villalba Olivella and manager Alberto Granados. The bar area inside has been extended and the décor brightened up, with light coloured bars, tables and stools. The dining area in the back has comfortable low seating and a small private space to one side. There is also a large sidewalk terrace.
Their trademark showcase running along the front bar is filled with an impressive selection of fresh fish and seafood, along with cold tapas. The dishes here differ somewhat from the now familiar Catalina menu, but still has some of the classics such as the rollitos of cheese, bacon and prawns and their roast chicken croquetas. There are also daily specials and a good cocktail and wine list. Service is attentive, professional and friendly.
Favourite dishes include the aforementioned rollito, grilled chistorras, the fritos and on our most recent visit, we loved the super tender glazed beef rib that slides right off the bone. I really like the new look and was glad to see they have kept the original arched shelving behind the bar. Rumour has it there will be an 8th Catalina opening early next year in Avda de la Buhaira. Stay tuned.
