La Goleta (The Schooner) is a tiny bar in the Santa Cruz owned by Alvaro Peregil (son of the late flamenco singer Pepe Peregil). Originally founded as a wine store by Alvaro’s grandfather in 1904 it still maintains its original features, such as the mahogany bar, making it stand out among the many more recent, and more touristy, bars around it. It also stands out because there is almost always a massive crowd of customers outside at the high tables. The bar was a pioneer in popularising orange wines, still popular here along with the beer and sherry, and serves a small range of traditional tapas, including stews of chickpeas, snails and pork, as well as montaditos (small sandwiches).
One of their more unusual tapas is the “Islote Peregil”, named after the little island that made headlines a few years ago during the Peregil Island Crisis when Morocco unsuccessfully tried to claim the unpopulated Spanish island as its own. This tapa is only available in winter and is made of minced pork and veal, garlic, onion and parsley on a potato base, which is then covered with tomato sauce… and topped with a small Spanish flag.
There is now a larger bar next door, called Alvaro Peregil, where you can sit down comfortably, but with the same commitment to tradition as the original, and decorated with bright hand-painted ceramic tiles.
