It doesn’t get much more old-school sevillano than Bar Taquilla. Opened on March 28th 1983 and now run by Manuel Oliva Fariñas after taking over from his father, this family-run spot is an oasis of tradition amongst the ever-encroaching tourist-focused bars in El Arenal. Manuel has kept to the original hours, opening early for breakfast and then closing late afternoon after lunch. He says that in order to stay open in the evenings it would mean hiring extra staff outside his close knit team and he feels he would lose the essence of the bar he loves, adding that sometimes money isn’t everything.
Expect classic tapas, ice cold Cruzcampo and a good wine selection served amid old bullfighting photos & artwork. There’s also a small side walk terrace. I was happy to see marinated pork liver with cilantro on the menu, something you don’t find much here any more, and we also enjoyed the fritos and an exceptional solomillo al whisky. Great service, friendly ambiance.
