This prime corner spot in the Plaza Alfalfa has seen many changes over the years. When I first moved here in 1993 it was home to the venerable Horno San Buenaventura and, after a couple of other establishments have come and gone, it is now home to Catalina La Barra. And I think this one is here to stay. Sister bar to both Catalina Casa de Comidas and La Quinta it is a fresh take on a typical Andaluz tapas bar. First of all, it’s actually a bar. Yep, tall stools line the massive bar (with possibly the longest vitrina – display case – in town) as well as along the windows facing the square. Outside there is an ample terrace.
Co-owners Gonzalo Villalba (chef) and Alberto Granados (front of house) really are a local dream team when it comes to putting together a culinary concept that works here. Their professionalism and attention to detail is not only apparent in the quality of the dishes and wines on offer, but it is also reflected in their well-trained and knowledgeable staff. Busy and buzzy since day one (opened mid-June) I look forward to spending a lot of time here. It’s casual enough that you can just stop in for a quick beer and a snack, or you could make a whole meal of it, with a varied menu offering both tapas and raciones of classic Andalusian dishes. Also a very good wine list. You want to be here!
