Casa Robles

Updated March 2024

After a recent re-visit to the tapas bar area at Casa Robles I came here to update the page and had forgotten that in 2018 I had written the following about Juan Robles, who died at age 85 on March 2021, and I admit I got a bit choked up remembering once again how kind he had always been to me. If he ever saw me at an event standing on my own he would come over and keep me company, and of course he always made me feel welcome in his restaurants.

You know when you really admire and respect someone, and are a little in awe of them? Well, that is how I feel about Don Juan Robles, who is pretty much an restaurateur icon here in Sevilla.

The Robles family has been synonymous with fine dining in the city since it was founded in 1954. I first came across this location, their original restaurant, almost 30 years ago, when I was looking for a place to celebrate my birthday. At the time I thought – wow, expensive but so worth it! – and my opinion hasn’t changed over the years, other than to rethink the “expensive” bit, as plenty of gastrobars these days charge similar prices and many other restaurants a lot more. In other words, you get value for money here. Clearly an “old-school” experience, and one of the best, now run by Pedro and Laura Robles.

You can have tapas in the bar or opt for a meal either outside on the terrace, or in one of their dining areas. I personally love the intimate rooms on the main floor. As it’s been a while since I’ve eaten in the restaurant I’m going to start fresh here (I had photos dating back to 2007!) and focus on the tapas bar for now until I can get back to try the restaurant again.
