Alfarería 21 is the latest bar and restaurant by brothers Paco, Pepe and Carlos Arcas, the owners of two of my favourite Triana bars, Las Golondrinas I and II, and is a project I’ve been interested in since its inception several years ago, when Paco took me on a tour of the old Ceramica Montalván just as work was beginning. Later I was treated to another tour and the restoration was stunning, combining modernity with preserved and restored elements of the original ceramics factory.
The bar is downstairs and the main restaurant is upstairs on two floors. There is also a lovely rooftop bar/restaurant, and additional seating out in the patios. The original tile work throughout (made here when it was still a ceramics factory) has been preserved, together with the wood and inlaid tile ceiling, so the whole location has an elegant and very colourful appearance.
The food is very good too, as expected. Favourites include the prawn and pecorino fritos, lamb pinchitos with a lime-yoghurt sauce, chicken and oloroso croquetas in panko, and delicious grilled meats. Extensive wine list and excellent service.
