Mamá Bistro is part of Grupo GMI (Gusto Made in Italy), a local family-run venture that I think serves some of the best Italian food in town. This is a slightly different concept, a restaurant offering stylish Mediterranean cuisine along with some classic Spanish dishes. It’s a great addition to Mateos Gago street, which over the years has become saturated with (mostly) mediocre tapas bars, and it’s also a nice option for people looking for something other than tapas.
Co-owner Fabrizia Innocenzi has worked her usual magic with the décor, a wonderful rustic chic pastiche that is both attractive and inviting. There are two dining areas, with a more casual spot for drinks in front of the bar, and a small sidewalk terrace. Terrific food – love the cod in squid ink tempura! – but everything we tried there was excellent. There’s a good wine list and the service is attentive and friendly. Check it out.
