Bar El Cañizo

Updated May 2021

My discovery of Bar El Cañizo in 2018 had a lovely element of serendipity to it, as I’d just read about it for the first time on Instagram the morning I was heading to an appointment at Hospital Virgen del Rocio, and as it was nearby, it turned out to be the perfect place for a tapas lunch.

El Cañizo was founded in 1980, and is now owned by Manuel Martínez and family. It’s very much a neighbourhood type of bar, basically simple, but with lots of bright tiles. There’s also a small sidewalk terrace.

Then the other day I just happened to be near enough to the barrio to stop in again and, just like the previous visit, the food was excellent, including the ensaladilla (I’m normally not a fan) with gambas al ajillo, the meatballs in PX sauce, and grilled presa Ibérica with garlicky mushrooms. I love the cosy vibe, and the friendly and welcoming service.

Unusually the bar is not open in the evenings, instead being open early for breakfast, to cater for the nearby hospital.
