I’ve had Ajo & Agua on my radar for some time but as I am normally out and about at midday, and not usually at weekends, I kept missing them. Until one day the stars aligned and we found ourselves arriving at opening time on a Friday afternoon. This tiny bodeguita is run by Fernando Maíllo & Rocío Diánez and is a neighbourhood favourite. There are just a few tall tables inside, two of which are in the doorways, and some bar space as well. But yeah, it’s cosy, with a charming rustic-vintage vibe.
The menu is short and specific. Charcuterie and cheeses, various “tostas” and “montaditos”, and a few hot dishes, served with a good selection of wines, vermouth and both on tap and craft beers. The service is personal and friendly, like you are visiting Fernando and Rocío in their home. They have just opened a second location up by Cruz Roja – the Ajo & Agua Livingroom – more news on that as I have it.
