This was my second visit to Casa Murillo. First time we just stopped for a snack (shared a plate of croquetas) and then the other day decided to go back and have a proper meal. It’s a neighbourhood bar just around the corner from my house so I wanted to get to know it a bit better. Now I wish I hadn’t.
It’s very seldom I write a harsh review here, in fact I took a few days to process what had happened so that I wasn’t writing in a fit of hot rage (seriously, that’s how awful it was). Upon reflection, I realised this may be just a “one bad apple” situation but from what I’ve now heard elsewhere I think this bar has a problem. I don’t think it’s the food because most of it coming out of the kitchen looked pretty good, and the croquetas we’d previously tried were fine. However the chocos fritos we ordered this time were so tough and rubbery that we couldn’t eat them. Meanwhile a dish we had asked the waiter about (a pringá brioche) was also brought to the table. When I explained we had only asked about it but hadn’t actually ordered it he took it a way in a huff and proceeded to ignore us after that.
So then we flagged down a waitress and told her that the chocos were very hard and she said that’s how chocos are. Wtf? This was not feeling good at all. I explained to her that there was a difference between having a bit of texture and being inedible and she said “well what do you want me to do about it?”. Uhhhh… change it for something else? She said she’d have to check. Then we were left alone at our table for at least 10 minutes. When the original waiter finally came back he was furious. He said first I sent back food I had ordered (??) and now I was complaining about the chocos and he didn’t know what I expected them to do… and I was speechless. I honestly could not believe he was talking to me like this. In the end, after a few more unpleasantries on his part, I said we preferred to just leave and I asked for a bill for the wine. I mentioned that I was a food writer with a website all about Sevilla and that I had hoped to write a review, just so he knew I wasn’t “just a tourist”, which was clearly how we were being treated, and that I did actually know something about food. And he said, “Well good for you”.
He presented me with a bill that included the wine, the bread/service (we had refused the bread) and… the chocos. Then he proceeded to give me another lecture on how I was ruining his livelihood and finally he told us to just get out. Like I say, maybe this guy was just having a bad day but I leave it for you to decide. This was my experience.
