Opened in 1973 by present owner Marta Boa’s grandfather José (her father Manuel retired earlier this year), Bar Dueñas is still a very “de toda la vida” neighbourhood tapas bar serving up excellent home-style cooking at honest prices. It’s cosy and comfortable, with about half a dozen tables, a small bar with stools and a few tall tables out on the side walk. The corner location has windows on either side that let in lots of natural light.

You’ll find a lot of fabulous stews here, many first created by José Boa’s wife Conchita Limón, and now expertly prepared by chef Francisco Barrera, who has been with Bar Dueñas for over 40 years. These  include their famous albóndigas (meatballs), carrillada (pork cheeks), menudo (tripe), espinacas con garbanzos and – my favourite – pork kidneys in sherry sauce. The classic sevillano menu also has a good selection of top charcuterie and cheeses, fried fish and various revueltos (scrambled eggs). Marta and team are happy to suggest wines and sherry to pair with your dishes. Tapas are available at the bar, with medias and raciones served at the tables.

It’s a great little spot just a stone’s throw from the Duchess of Alba’s palace, Casa Dueñas. Be sure to book a table as it fills up fast.
