Despite a tendency to fifties-style wood panelling and ceiling tiles, La Flor de Toranzo is a popular “de toda la vida” stopping spot. The name comes from a valley (San Martín de Toranzo) in Santander, where the family who run the bar originally came from, some four generations ago. It started life in 1952 as a butcher’s shop run by the present owner’s grandfather, Triunfo Venancio, and even today the bar is more commonly known by the nickname “Casa Trifón”.

The tapas menu is quite short, and consists mainly of various tasty montaditos like lomo al jerez or roquefort cheese with sobrasada, as well as one of its signature tapas – Cantabrian anchovies and condensed milk – which is probably an acquired taste. My favourite was the spicy chorizo piquante with roasted pork loin. The staff are friendly and helpful and it’s obvious that most of the clientele are regulars. La Flor de Toranzo is mainly a “quick snack and a drink” place, but using only the best quality charcuterie and luxury tinned goods, it’s a niche they fill very well.
