This evening at 8.00 pm Art & Gastronomy week will begin at La Libélula, Sevilla’s first multi-functional art-fashion-decor-gourmet-lifestyle space. It promises to be a great opportunity to see the best works of artists Christopher Donaire, Barea Balcris and sculptor Chiqui Díaz (looking forward to seeing his dragonfly – libélula – sculpture), as well as enjoying a wide array of gourmet food and wines.

Throughout the week there will be various tastings: wine, cheese, olive oil, gin & tonic and coffee. Check the poster above for tasting times and prices. There is limited space available so if you’d like to attend you can reserve your place by email: contact@lalibelulashop.com

Remembering 11M

11m (1)
I guess everyone in Spain remembers where they were ten years ago today when they heard the terrible news, that simultaneous, coordinated terrorist bombings on ten commuter trains approaching Atocha station in Madrid took the lives of 191 people and wounded 1,800.

These photos are of an anti-terrorism protest that was put up yesterday in Plaza Encarnación. “Walls of peace” and two murals by artist MULA (Ramón Lez). We will never forget 11M.

Restaurant 50

rest 50
Last September I attended a press conference for a new initiative in Sevilla called Restaurant 50. The idea was a simple one, to have a select group of restaurants offering discounts to its members. I was given a card to try out, put it in my wallet and kind of just left it there, other than once using it while out for lunch with a friend at Zarabanda’s. At first I thought I wouldn’t get much use out of it because I tend to go to tapas bars rather than restaurants (some of the R50 restaurants offer tapas but the 50% discount only applies to raciones/large plates). Then the other day I stopped in at Room Zero and thought I’d try my Restaurant 50 card again… and I think I’m hooked now. Especially after doing the math on the R50 website and realising that even using my card once a month would save me close to 200€ a year (150€ after paying the annual fee).

There are actually two fees: 50€ annual and 15€ for three months. You can also get a 30-day trial card for free, but these are only sent out to addresses in Spain so are not useful for visitors just here for a short time. However, plans are afoot to have R50 cards available in selected hotels and tourist offices. Will update that info here when it happens.

At the moment there are 21 restaurants to choose from, with more being added all the time. Certain restrictions apply in terms of days and times that you can use your card, and also how many people you can include (usually it’s weekday lunchtimes and good for up to six people). As mentioned before, only main dishes or raciones are eligible for the discount, drinks and desserts are not included, and neither are daily specials, such as set lunch menus. But it still works out to a substantial saving, especially if there are a few of you. There are basically two steps for using your card.

  1. Call and reserve a table saying you are a R50 member (also check on the restrictions).
  2. Show your card when you pay and get 50% off main dishes or raciones.

So now that I’ve blown the first six months of my free card (duh!) I plan to make good use of it between now and September. Especially when friends are visiting, or for a special occasion meal. And then I will happily renew it. Also looking forward to seeing which other restaurants end up on the list.

Gourmet Experience Cata

GE cata (1)

Last night Gourmet Experience Duque held its first “interactive” wine tasting, presented by sommeliers David Castro and Silvia Flores. The setting was simple and elegant, and I liked that it had a nice relaxed feel to it. During the introduction we were served Taittenger champagne with oysters, which was a perfect way to start. Castro and Flores worked very well together – both are very passionate but with different styles that complement each other. Wines were paired with food from the Gourmet Experience tapas bars, and we were also entertained with snippets of contemporary flamenco.

GE cata (3)

Corimbo from Bodegas Horra with pavía de merluza courtesy of Egaña.
We were also served a fab crispy pork shin with quinoa from Barajas 20 Tapas.

GE cata (2)

Dido from Bodega Eneas served with pig head sausage from the Gourmet Experience Bar.
And fun flamenco!

GE cata (4)

Stunning Stilton and Cabrales cheeses with 30-year-old Noe PX from Gonzalez-Byass.
Here you see Flores waxing lyrical – clearly her father’s daughter.

Watch for future food and wine events at Gourmet Experience Duque. I think that once the good weather arrives that big rooftop terrace is going to become one of THE places to hang out. The other very cool thing about the GE Bar is that you can purchase food and wine from the shop and enjoy it there. Corkage is 3€ per bottle and to have your food purchases plated and nicely presented it’s 2.50€ per item. When you combine that with the option of also grabbing a burger or tapa to go with it all you get a very interesting concept – a gourmet food court that is striving to be unique and yet accessible. The staff in the food and wine shop are very knowledgeable and helpful, and there’s also the bonus of having Silvia Flores working in the wine section to offer expert advice.

Paco de Lucía

[youtube=”http://youtu.be/0o8vszqVL2U”]
Deeply shocked and saddened by the death of Paco de Lucía yesterday. I had the great privilege of seeing him perform live twice, here in Sevilla, and I was hoping I might get a chance to see him a third time at this year’s Bienal de Flamenco. Such a irreparable loss, the world is a much emptier place now.

Adiós maestro, descanse en paz.
