Sol y Sombra has “moved house” with its dining room relocating to a spacious well-lit spot on the corner, but it’s still next door to its classic tapas bar (just on the other side now). Founded in 1961 by Jos\u00e9 and Patrocinio, today it is run by their children Roc\u00edo and Antonio. It’s totallly \u201cold school\u201d here, with a bullfighting\/feria ambiance (sol y sombra, meaning sun and shade, is part of the seating arrangements at the bullring), with lots of old posters on the walls. There are some tables in the front rooms of the bar (with their famous loo-roll \u201cnapkins\u201d), and a larger standing only room at the back with long shelves for your food and drinks.<\/p>\n

Solomillo al ajo<\/em> is the house speciality, which is a slow-cooked stew of pork tenderloin with a massive amount of tender whole garlic cloves. There is also an excellent fritura de la casa<\/em> (fried fish plate with hake, cod, squid and marinated shark). And if you\u2019re not worried about your cholesterol level or daily calorie intake, try the revuelto de la casa<\/em>, a dish of lightly scrambled eggs mixed with chorizo and potatoes, or the sizzling chistorra al ajillo<\/em>. There’s also a good selection of Ib\u00e9rico charcuterie and cheeses, and nice wines by the glass, including national and local wines. It’s not strictly a tapas bar, as everything comes in full or half raciones<\/em>, with the selections displayed on cards taped to the walls. Best to go with a few friends so you can share the larger plates. And while there is a bread charge, it’s not a per person charge and you get a very generous basket of lovely fresh “pan de picos” bread with gourmet picos & rega\u00f1\u00e1.<\/p>\n
