My discovery of Bar El Ca\u00f1izo in 2018 had a lovely element of serendipity to it, as I’d just read about it for the first time on Instagram the morning I was heading to an appointment at Hospital Virgen del Rocio, and as it was nearby, it turned out to be the perfect place for a tapas lunch.<\/p>\n

El Ca\u00f1izo was founded in 1980, and is now owned by Manuel Mart\u00ednez and family. It’s very much a neighbourhood type of bar, basically simple, but with lots of bright tiles. There’s also a small sidewalk terrace.<\/p>\n

Then the other day I just happened to be near enough to the barrio to stop in again and, just like the previous visit, the food was excellent, including the ensaladilla (I’m normally not a fan) with gambas al ajillo, the meatballs in PX sauce, and grilled presa Ib\u00e9rica with garlicky mushrooms. I love the cosy vibe, and the friendly and welcoming service.<\/p>\n

Unusually the bar is not open in the evenings, instead being open early for breakfast, to cater for the nearby hospital.<\/p>\n
