Located just off the Plaza Alfalfa, Sal Gorda is celebrating its 10th year anniversary this year. Owned and run by the brothers Cabrera Fern\u00e1ndez (Elias, Ahitamy and Antonio) this was one of the “first wave” innovative tapas bars in the city, and it’s still going strong.<\/p>\n

On the corner of pedestrianised street in a fairly narrow building, it extends vertically rather than horizontally, with a bar area on the ground floor, a cosy dining room on the first floor, and the kitchen on the top floor. I love the pleasant, friendly atmosphere, with most of the activity centred on the ground floor, where there are half a dozen tables alongside the bar, with low tables, chairs and window banquettes. Big plate-glass windows look out onto the little terrace out in the square.<\/p>\n

The tapas are mostly traditional with a twist, with some creative crockery and presentations. A short wine list, with craft beers also available. Service is very good. I like that, along with asking about allergies when you sit down, they also check if you want bread (there’s no service charge).<\/p>\n
