Casa Eugenio, near the Puerta Osario, is what is known locally as a tasca, a basic no-frills neighbourhood bar, with a traditional tapas menu. The current owner, Eugenio, has been running the bar for 45 years since buying it from its previous owner. Before that he was employed here, as barman and waiter. The layout of the premises still gives a clue to its origins as an abacería, with a shop on the street corner (still with original shelves, and shop windows), and a small bar with a couple of tables in the back. A few tables make up a small sidewalk terrace when the bar gets busy. The decor is plain, with the usual Semana Santa pictures, and my eye was taken by a nice model of a paso on a shelf behind the bar, as well as a massive knife, which it turns out is used for cutting salt cod. We only stopped for a couple of tapas, an excellent pringá (one of the best I’ve had), and a carne con tomate with perfectly tender meat, but unfortunately a “straight out of the tin”  tasting sauce. I have since heard that the cola de toro croquetas are amazing, so will be back to try those.

Festooned with knick-knacks, photos, posters and some quite unidentifiable objects, La Taberna serves up traditional Andalusian tapas in a cosy and comfortable setting. There are a couple of tables  in front of the bar as you walk in, and then a few more at the back. At the bar itself it’s standing room only. There’s also a small side walk terrace with tall tables.

This is your basic cheap & cheerful place with friendly service and tasty tapas. The short wine list has mostly regional wines including sherry. House specialities are the “huevos”, either with tomato sauce or chorizo.
