La Monumental is named for an almost forgotten piece of Seville’s bullfighting history. It stands on the site of the city’s short-lived second plaza de toros (bullring), La Monumental, opened in 1918, closed in 1921, and demolished in 1930. So it’s not surprising that the bar has a bullfighting theme, nicely done with arty posters and bright colours in the bar and dining area (there’s also an ample sidewalk terrace). Recently the dining room has been expanded and includes a large mural of the Monumental bullring.

Tapas are traditional with a few twists, such as fried pastry filled with seafood and three cheeses and stewed pig’s cheeks with almonds served in vol au vent, and the Morcilla de Sabiote with pine nuts and cinnamon is a must-try! Good wines by the glass and excellent service.
