Started by an Andalusian and a Catalán back in 1962, Er Caserio was sold twice after that and then came full circle in 1999 when it was taken over by José María Diez (Sevillano) and Ana Guerra Castro (Barcelonesa), later run by Ana and her son (chef) Alejandro Diez Guerra. This year Ana passed the reins over to her son-in-law Juanlu Lebrera, who has spent the past ten years working at the bar (Ana and Alejandro have a new project). It is open for lunch only and you’ll find delicious home style comfort food here served in a traditional atmosphere. It feels a bit like walking into a village bar and I love it. There’s a bar with tall stools to your left as you enter next to a cosy dining area (reservations recommended).

Tapas and platos include lots of stews and grilled meats along with a few cold dishes and fritos. Favourite dishes are the homemade meatballs in gravy, super tender carrillada, spinach with garbanzos and grilled lamb chops. Service is casual and friendly, there’s a decent wine list and it’s just a lovely place when you want to get away from the whole gastrobar scene.
