Founded 104 years ago by present owner Pablo Quintero’s grandfather, Casa Lucas is a living testament to Sevilla’s gastronomy and culture, and one of the few traditional ultramarinos (small grocery stores) still with us. Along with its bulk legumes, preserves, artisanal cheeses and Iberian cured meats you can also find traditional tavern fare, with tapas and sandwiches, and a top selection of quality craft beers, wines, and spirits.

Aside from a few “improvements” made by Pablo’s uncle, including replacing the wooden shelves with metal ones and removing the marble counter, things here look pretty much as they have always done, and the result is both charming and cosy, a comfortable spot where you can stop for a drink and a snack – try before you buy – while you shop.

This total gem – Sevilla’s oldest ultramarinos (food shop) – has undergone several changes since it opened in 1894, the latest being when it changed hands a few years ago. But it still maintains its original charm and friendly service.

Fabulous top product here from Gillardeau oysters to Jamón Ibérico de Bellota, cheeses, charcuterie and luxe tinned goods/preserves, which you can pair with an impressive selection of wines, including some great sherries. Love it here.

Sister bar to Luís Blanco Giles’ Salsamento (just around the corner, and a stone’s throw from the Metropol Parasol – AKA Las Setas) this location has recently been renamed from Bañadera (the original bar at this location, La Bañera, was a well-loved local tasca). Luís has transformed it into a cosy and stylish spot, making good use of the floor-to-ceiling windows that let in lots of natural light. Recently the windows have had a makeover and they now open so it’s almost like sitting outside.

As at Salsamento, the menu is mostly high quality charcuterie, preserved fish, cold tapas, with a few stews and “tostas” rounding things out. The wine menu is short but covers most bases. It’s a great place for a light lunch or a start-off point for your evening tapeo.

Lama la Uva is the creation of Ana Linares from Cádiz, whose aim has been to introduce some of Andalucía’s lesser known top quality wines and other delicacies to a wider public. It’s located in the Plaza Regina next to the Metropol Parasol, where it joins several other establishments that are making this one of the top go-to places in town. The shop itself, where as well as wines you can buy ham, cheese and speciality foods, is a pleasant minimalist space on the ground floor. There is a tasting room upstairs for private events, as well as a small terrace in the square. A more recent addition is the cosy dining area in the adjoining building, where you can enjoy a selection of tapas to pair with Ana’s wines.

The name is taken from Aesop’s fable “The Fox and the Grapes” (an adaptation of which was also published by Spanish writer Félix María Samañiego). But this time there is a twist,  with the fox (us!) getting the grapes this time, and they turn out to be the best ones (so no sour grapes). It’s a great spot to shop, taste and enjoy.

Salsamento opened in 2016 in the up and coming Regina neighbourhood near the Metropol Parasol, and owner Luís Blanco Giles has kept the dream going since then. Billing itself as “a grocery that’s a bar, a bar that’s a grocery”, there’s more than a nod to the traditional abacerías and ultramarinos of old Sevilla, but the shop/bar – created by local designers Lugadero – is modern, bright and attractive. With the addition of a small street terrace the space feels more open and spacious.

The product range of top quality Spanish and Portuguese canned preserves (mussels, clams, sardines, anchovies, etc) are from José Gourmet, Minor and Minerva, with Barbate tuna by Herpac and Concepción. Salsamento also offers a wide variety of sausages and cheeses, little sandwiches, traditional stews and a good selection of olive oils and wines. The service is very efficient and friendly. Very nice wine list too.

Everything is prettily displayed on shelves that run along two sides of the shop, and there are several tables for customers to sit and sample their purchases or order from the tapas menu.

Ernesto Malasaña’s La Niña Bonita first opened as an abacería (a small food shop with a bar) but these days functions as an annex for his original bar on calle Calatrava, Bar Antojo. The Equipo MpuntoR empire also includes Perro Viejo and Perrochiko near Plaza Encarnación, as well as Pez Tomillo, a beachfront bar in Málaga. Seis (his sixth enterprise) is located in the Hotel Inglaterra.

The decor at La Niña Bonita reflects the period of the original, which first opened in 1931.  As mentioned, the menu is the same as Bar Antojo across the street, and food is brought over for you from there, with the exception of cheeses and charcuterie. It’s a cosy and comfortable little bar serving some lovely wines by the glass, and the service is very friendly.

Founded in 2009, La Tienda de La Azotea continues to reinvent itself and each time it’s always a welcome and refreshing change. Located across the street from their main restaurant, La Tienda has a new look with an updated menu focusing more on tapas, along with a few larger plates on offer for their fresh fish and grilled meats.

The bar is cosy with large window that completely open up so you almost feel like you’re outdoors. There are tall tables as well as stools along the bar itself. Favourite dishes include the crispy pastry filled with cheese, leeks and prawns, anchovies on toast with sun dried tomato butter and the spicy red tuna tacos.

Make sure you check out the daily specials – some are pictured here so they may not be available when you visit, but there will be something equally delicious. And to start (or finish) there is an impressive list of national cheeses and charcuterie, as well as excellent desserts. Waiters are super helpful and happy to suggest wines to pair with your dishes. Great cocktail list too.
