Milonga’s

Updated March 2019

I first came across this Argentinian restaurant back in 2009 while I was out cycling with a friend and, after reading the menu that was posted outside, knew I had to try it out. Soon after that I had the opportunity to do so when friends from London came to visit. Happy to say I was right about the menu, and the wine and service was excellent too. So why did it take me almost 11 years to go back for more? I honestly don’t know. Well, other than it is a proper restaurant, no tapas here, and I mostly tend to visit tapas bars. But when my friend Kalé said she was in the mood for MEAT the other day, I thought of Milonga’s.

It was great going back, even though there were only two of us (portions are very generous). The food was superb, just as I remembered it, and the service just as attentive and friendly. One big change was that the umber orange interior had been swapped out for a pale cream walls and table cloths. Also a few changes in the menu, as you would expect. And when I spoke with owner Rafael Martín and showed him my old photos from 2009, that was almost the best part. He was so excited to see the pics (“I look so young!”), and happily posed for a new photo. He also intoduced me to his granddaughter, who is now a waiter. These days Rafael no longer puts on his uniform, but he is still at the restaurant every day for lunch service. I promised I wouldn’t wait another ten years to come back again, and would also come with friends so we could try the mixed grills.
