La Quinta

Updated April 2017

La Quinta is actually a restaurant, not a tapas bar, although there is a small selection of tapas on the menu. The building, a former casa palacio, is quite impressive, with a number of dining rooms arranged around a central patio, on two floors. But despite being pleasant enough, with some nice ceramic tile pictures and other touches (even the bathrooms are beautiful!), it feels more like a corporate-style hotel than a restaurant/bar. The exception is the side area downstairs, where the bar, including a kitchen area with one of those big circular wood-burning pizza ovens, leads through to an lovely outside courtyard for al fresco dining. Alongside, the corner room has an open fireplace (complete with fire, at least during the winter), and has a cosier feel to it.

On the menu you’ll find salads and other cold dishes, fish and meat tartares, as well as cooked fish dishes. But the house speciality is their BBQ meats, featuring aged Galician beef and Cinco Jotas Bellota pork, which you can have on their own or with a selection of sauces (2€ extra per sauce), served with either salad, chunky chips or roasted potatoes. We enjoyed a tapa of chistorras followed by full portions of grilled octopus and pluma Ibérica (pork shoulder), all of which were excellent. On another visit the beef burger was a bit too dense and there was no evidence of the promised Idiazabal cheese, and spaghettini was actually spaghetti, but with a generous portion of bolognese. Be sure to ask about the daily specials – a recent dish of braised artichoke with stewed oxtail was delicious. Cheeky desserts by Manu Jara.
