Casa Belmonte

I love market bars and for me a big part of the attraction is that you know the food is going to be market fresh. So I was a bit surprised to see kangaroo and ostrich meat on the menu at Casa Belmonte and left those to (possibly) try another time. Instead I stuck mostly with homegrown and I wasn’t disappointed. My one criticism was that the balsamic reduction on the ensaladilla overpowered the delicate flavours of the seafood. But the retinto beef carrillada was outstanding and alubias with clams was a comfort food delight. I’m not sure the Irish beef was any better than a nice cut of retinto would have been, but in any case it was the sauce of beef juices and sweet Málaga wine that stole the show with that dish.

It’s early days for Casa Belmonte and they are still trying different things with the menu. The stew of the day is bound to be a hit, and I think they could do with more tapas options (there are only nine including the stew), but I’ll definitely be back to see how they go.
