Mediterráneo

My first visit to Mediterráneo was pleasant enough. At first the waitress seemed almost surly, but when I made an effort at small talk, commenting on the weather, she brightened up and became quite chatty. This location has changed hands a few times over the last 15 years – I think this time it could work. Directly across from the Bellas Artes University Building, Mediterráneo has a very nice terrace and downstairs bar area where tapas are served. Upstairs is a dining area for raciones which can also be booked for special events. The tapas are good enough. The more traditional dishes – a cool & refreshing salmorejo and lightly breaded crispy fried fish – were actually very good. The attempts at “innovation” were less successful: the presa with provolone was both fatty and chewy, and the nutty fried camembert was still rock solid inside. Also, a very poor wine list (at least for whites). But I would definitely go back for the fried fish. And I suspect it is a very popular place for university students.
