A stone’s throw from the cathedral, this place is easily the absolutely very best tapa bar on Mateos Gago. Everything on the menu is delicious but I’d personally recommend the solomillo al whisky, (tender pork loin in a garlicky whisky sauce), chocos fritos (fried chunks of cuttlefish) and the flamenquín (a roll of pork loin, jamón serrano and cheese, breaded and deep fried). Excellent house rioja. Recently reopened under new management and just as good as ever.

The staff are mostly the same as before the management change, and they are really a lovely bunch of guys. If you show up and find all the tables are taken (quite usual) just tell one of them you are waiting for a table , either inside or on the terrace, and he’ll put your name down on the waiting list and suggest you have a drink at the bar while you wait. If you prefer to have a ‘proper meal’ there is also a dining room next to the tapa bar area offering raciones (basically larger portions of tapas) which can be shared if you are with a few people. In 14 years I’ve never had a tapa or racion here that wasn’t delicious.
